My first larger programming project will begin shortly. There will still be a lot of research and development that needs to happen before the program can get off of the ground. I’ll do my best to capture the process as it goes along.
As you may have read on the rest of this site, I am studying Computer Science at the University of Kentucky. I am only a couple semesters into the program, but will tackling topics as fast as I can handle it. My work in the Facilities Information Services department also gives me a lot of opportunities to develop my skills. So, thank you to everyone encouraging me and helping me out.
The general idea of the project is that there is a need for a cheaper, simple, customizable system to manage inventory, customers, and point of sale. My plan is to create a program in Visual Basic that accomplishes these goals. That’s where a lot of the research will have to come in since I’ve had limited experience with those types of systems as well as Visual Basic in general. I’m once again reminded of the foolish saying:
“I’ve never done it before, but I read about it on the Internet so I don’t think it will be that hard.”
The good thing about embarking on a digital challenge is that for the most part, everything has already been provided as far as the tools to make the product. The biggest cost of this will be time, so I plan on taking things slow and trying to come up with a schedule to follow in an attempt to replicate a real business environment (a slow one where I'm the boss).
